Adults in families with children are more prone to cold than those in families without kids. If prizes were given for excellence in spreading germs, children would always be the winners. Children who go to crèche or school spread more infection. Besides cold, some of the other infection commonly transmitted from child to child (and then to adults) include diarrhoea and impetigo (a bacterial skin infection). What you can do: Make sure that toys, telephones, doorknobs and other potentially germ laden items and areas in your home are disinfected every few days with a solution of disinfectants such as Dettol and water and make sure that your kids wash their hands regularly. According to a study of a crèche, it was found that a simple practice of cleaning toys with a disinfectant three times a week reduced the number respiratory infections in children by more than one third.
