Parallel films

AbilityFest will showcase films by, with and about people who are differently abled from across the country

Our city will be the proud venue of a unique film festival in July. Ability Foundation, a cross disability NGO based here, will be holding an International Disability Film Festival.

Called AbilityFest, this first-of-its-kind festival will take place between July 7 and July 11, 2005. The festival will be an inspiring showcase of extraordinary films from around the world: films by, with and about people with disabilities.

The well known faces behind the festival are Jayshree Raveendran, Festival Chairperson, film personality Revathy, Vice-Chairperson, P.K. Nair, Director, and C. K. Ranganathan, President. Members of the festival include Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Jaya Bachchan, Mani Ratnam, Rajiv Menon and Nandita Das. For more details, log on to www.abilityfoundation.org, email abilityindia@vsnl.net, or call 24552400.

Kasaravalli live

Sathyam Cinema will feature the world premiere of filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli's `Hasina', on May 25. Kasaravalli is the only director in India to have won the Swarnakamal or the Golden Lotus award four times. A product of FTII, Pune, Kasaravalli's are serious works that focus on the social and political ethos and the forces that make an individual behave in a particular manner. Some of his works (in Kannada, with subtitles) are `Ghatashradha', `Bannada Vesha' (telefilm), `Thayi Saheba', and `Dweepa'.

Kasaravalli has been brought down to the city as part of Sathyam Cinema's `Lights On' programme, a forum for us to meet and interact with the best artistes from the world of cinema. This exclusive rendezvous is the third of a monthly series. The screening of Kasaravalli's latest film `Hasina' will be followed by an interactive session with the director himself. The film will be shown in Sree theatre today, at 6.00 p.m.
