Bangalore with its salubrious climate is unfortunately a home for asthma and chronic allergies. Coupled with the fact that this is a technology city that unfortunately calls for odd and long working hours, the allergies could be well accompanied by health problems relating to the back. And in the many ways of tackling such problems, the Tibetan medical system (TMS), known as Sowa Rigpa is one. The concept, based on scientific principles, takes into account the patient's body and mind for holistic treatment. It is "in fact the summary of the experience of the Tibetan people of their various struggles against diseases over thousands of years," says Dorjee Rapten Neshar, Chief Medical Officer, Tibetan Medical Centre.
Wilson, a 28-year-old asthmatic is under Tibetan medication for the last eight months. He has been suffering from severe allergy, cold, cough, infection and gastric problems as well but is feeling better since taking Tibetan medicine. While it is good for these ailments, it also helps tackle work-related problems common among the younger lot. "Many professionals who visit us suffer from cervical spondylitis which manifests due to improper body postures at work places," says Dr. Dorjee.
"TMS has answers to all these problems as it follows the law of nature. Our body system, what we call as the internal environment, has a direct relationship with Mother Nature. There should be perfect coordination between these two in order to maintain good health. Cervical spondylitis is not only treated by medication, but also massage, acupressure, a few exercises and meditation," says Dr. Dorjee.
Four-fold approach
In TMS, the approach to treatment is four-fold that includes proper diet, behavioural regimen, medicines and external therapies.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute of His Holiness the Dalai Lama (Men-Tsee-Khang), Dharmasala did a one-year controlled study of 200 diabetic patients. "The results were excellent. The AIIMS report said blood sugar level was controlled by using Tibetan herbal medicines," says Dr. Dorjee.
The Bangalore centre, which was established in 1991, has conducted three years of preliminary test on 416 patients to help tackle ovarian, leukaemia and other cancers.
Treatment is also available for people suffering from cardio-vascular problems, nervous disorders, gynaecological, gastro-intestinal disorders and psychosomatic problems. Treatment for poor patients is free.
For more information, contact the Tibetan Medical Centre (Men-Tsee-Khang) at 295, 5th main road, near Anjaneya temple, Mahalaxmi Lay-out. For more information on the TMS call 23496190 or email tibmedicine@sify.com or call Dr. Dorjee Rapten Neshar on 94484-88808.
