INVIGORATING BREW: Flavoured hot teas are fast going up the popularity charts

Our good ol' desi chai is all set for a makeover. If you are someone like Saif Ali Khan in `Hum Tum' who thought chai was for the `amma' types, think again.

Set to woo the young and the old alike, chai will now tickle your palate with a foreign taste, some of which can be a toast to your health too.

Ever thought Slim `N' Svelte, Relax Lax and Sugar-Balance could mean more than funky health club jargon? Chamraj's Ice Teas in Race Course has launched a new range of hot herbal teas that claim to help you remain healthy and fit.

Variety fare

Their Sugar-Balance Black Tea claims to maintain your sugar threshold and, hence, keep diabetes at bay. This tea, a concoction of 80 per cent tea and 20 per cent herbal constituents, is said to have a synergy and acts parallel with the chemical drugs and, therefore, helps diabetics.

This one is for all those touchy about putting on those extra kilos. The Slim `N' Svelte tea is said to contain herbal elements that prevent lipid absorption and is a natural way to remain trim. But mind you, perseverance is the key.

Then, there is tea with antioxidants said to defer ageing and Relax Lax Tea to ease your bowel movements.

Not just health

If you thought the range of tea was for health freaks only, there is Spizy Masala Chai, Cinnamon Spice Green tea and Chocolate Black tea, said to be a favourite with youngsters, all priced at Rs. 5 a cup. The tea you sip can also have the flavour of flowers, which means champak, chameli, rose and lotus have been dried, crushed and mixed into your tea.

Season's best

Further, there is White Tea, Golden Tips and Frost Tea, the flavours of the season. White Tea, said to be the drink of the Emperors of China, was earlier grown in caves. This royal drink, priced at Rs. 15 a cup and Rs. 3,500 a kg, will turn your idea about tea upside down. A colourless liquid with a faint aroma of tea, it is made of tea buds.

Golden Tips, typical of its name, is golden brown in colour and will cost you Rs. 10 a cup. Frost Tea, made from the leaves that survive a frost attack, is Chamraj's winter speciality.

At the outlet, you can choose from 30 varieties and have them brewed right in front of you. So, for all those who swear by coffee, a visit to the boutique will tell you tea is not passé, not anymore.
