Rob Thomas: Something To Be

Melisma/Atlantic, CD, Rs. 399

Rob Thomas proved that he could go it alone when he teamed with Santana to produce "Smooth". The song co-written and sung by him bagged him three Grammys - Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.

Already a star with Matchbox20, Rob went alone after the band decided to take a break in 2002. He released the single "Lonely No More" in early 2005 and followed it up with `Something to be.' During its heyday, Matchbox20 was a phenomenon in America and was identified by its unique music that blended 70's arena rock with '90s hard rock.

But after all the success with Matchbox20, Rob's `Lonely No More' was branded as being closer to Justin Timberlake. And `Something to be' is no different. Except the first track, `This Is How a Heart Breaks,' which captures some of the freshness of yesteryears, the rest is probably best listened to in a Backstreet Boys album.

`Lonely No More' might find some takers as it resembles a funky new Maroon 5 number but the ballads like `Ever the Same' and `When the Heartache Ends' are just too much to handle. And this is where this review ends, because one falls asleep after this point. But if you want some intimate and over-emotive music with sad lyrics, then this album is for you.
