A CASE FOR JOYFUL MARRIAGE: Govinda ready with his first film release after becoming a parliamentarian
No, you can't miss that inherent sense of humour in Govinda when you speak to him even about as serious a subject as marriage. And that too with special reference to his home production Ssukh, slated for release this coming Friday as he assures us.
He categorises the film as a social, romantic comedy in which he attempts to perpetuate the value of marriage "without being preachy". The alarming rate of broken marriages in contemporary times was worrying him for a while. Hence he decided to make a film to voice his opinion in favour of this sacred institution.
"These days spouses divorce each other at the drop of a hat. The husband divorces the wife because she has become fat or is no longer attractive. The wife divorces the husband because he snores. They get entangled in small small issues and ignore the bigger concerns of life. I got the title of the film registered as Ssukh only to tell such people that this word exists," says Govinda.
You might call it an irony when he comments, "There is nothing called pardadari in films these days, especially in matters of sex. You can show even that in a dignified manner." This from a man who has propagated some obnoxious and totally avoidable dance movements and gestures himself!
However, this MLA from North Mumbai declares he has tried to propagate "cultural values in undertones" in Ssukh.
"I didn't want to become preachy in the film. So apni baat maine hanste khelte keh di hai"(I have voiced my opinion in a lighter, understated manner). That is, marriage is no joke. One must have faith in it. And one should always involve elders at home in serious, unsolved matters in marital life as they are the pillars of a successful home, because they don't take marriage non-seriously.
Choice of actors
Choosing Preeti Jhangiani to act opposite him, says Govinda, was the result of the fire he saw in her to become something. "I wanted to take a girl who had a passion to make it big in the film industry. I saw that fire in her eyes and the dedication in her attitude. She can emote effortlessly. To Aarti Chabaria and Chunkey Pandey also, I have given very important roles, because they are very good performers. When I met Chunkey Pandey I realised he was very innocent, which clearly shows on his face. I believe that only because of his innocent nature he was wiped out from the film industry. If he had not been in the fray for some more years, I would have felt very bad. So I took him. I wish that this film proves a landmark in his career, because he has lost none of his charms, energy and acting ability despite a long gap," he says fervently.
Labelling politics as his "service ground" and films his "passion", Govinda is now ready to weigh audiences' pulse for a subject like this.
"It should strike a chord with people, because it is an issue that concerns their lives," says Govinda, with confidence running through each of his words.
