The aroma of music

Mystique band recently charmed food lovers at Hookah

Popular band Mystique recently played at Hookah, celebrating the magic of Oriental romance. Formed in 2001 by Lionel Dentan and Sucheta Malhotra, the band plays West Asianand eastern European melodies peppered with shades of Indian ragas.

A blend of Oriental music that soothes, elevates and delights the soul with its Sufi chants, Mystique's offerings have a go-with-the-flow approach.

Listening to them in the rustic interiors of Hookah, one can savour the scent of cigars, coffee and liquors from all over the globe as the music changes from subtle to savvy and from fiery to serene.

The Sufi chants melt into European sounds. In this ambience, Hookah becomes a place where both young and old would might enjoy spending their afternoons and evenings.

Hookah offers a wide variety of Mediterranean cuisine.

It promises an `experience' beyond the usual dining place, emphasising more on the ambience and the feel-good factor.

Mystique's performances here may be a unique experience for the restaurant's clients, but the band has other aces up its collective sleeve. Sucheta is enthusiastic speaking about the band's new CD album, Melodies of the Orient.

"It is a labour of love. It took almost three years of recording, which is very unusual for a project. It's an international collaboration. Artistes from France, Spain, Russia have contributed their music in the recording."

With an impressive line-up of guest artistes, the CD features Sandro Mariotti on the saxophone, M.V. Chandrasekhar on the mridangam, A.J. Sen on the guitar and Kirill Parenchukki on percussions, besides Mystique's international members Osvaldo Jorge and Gennady Lavrentyev. This summer Mystique will perform with Kashif Ahmed and Siraj Ali on the sarangi and mandolin.
