The motivated lot

The Junior World Cup team that practised in Hyderabad was high on confidence and spirits

IN PREPARATION The team is going through the paces

It was a confident, well-trained and highly motivated Indian squad, which left Hyderabad after undergoing rigorous training in preparation for the Junior World Cup hockey championship.

For more than a month the cream of India's junior players were put through their paces by the chief Coach Harendra Singh at the Gachibowli hockey complex. Now if only the team can successfully defend its title in the championship, which starts in Rotterdam on June 29, all the effort will have been worth it.

An interaction with a few players indicated that they were pleased with the way camp was conducted.

The world-class floodlit facilities, good accommodation and the way Harendra Singh involved everyone in the preparations, raised their morale. The video lessons, which were arranged at the venue gave the players a chance to know their strengths and weaknesses and also form plans to counter rival moves.

The campaign was also given a Hyderabadi flavour when it was announced that Dr. Ravinder from the University of Hyderabad will accompany the team to Holland.

The Hyderabad based doctor was chosen because he had been attending to the players during the preparatory camp regularly. Since the doctor had come to know the players' strengths and weaknesses thoroughly, the brains-trust of the squad felt it would be a good idea to let the doctor look after their fitness levels in the tournament along with trainer Dr. Saju Joseph and assistant coach Clarence Lobo.

According to Harendra Singh, the players are in a perfect frame of mind and he was completely satisfied with the way they responded to the training. That none of them complained about the demanding schedule despite the scorching heat in Hyderabad showed their determination.

By mid July it will be known to what extent all the hard work put in during the camp has benefited the team .
