The do-good man

Kiran Karmakar has carved out a niche for himself with "Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki"

THE TELE-YUDISTHIR: Kiran Karmakar as Om in Star Plus's "Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki"

He drew his inspiration to act from the stage and yet today, Kiran Karmakar can't think of getting back to it. Right now, he is shooting just 12 days in a month for the popular daily on Star Plus, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, which has showered on him ample popularity and money, and is on the look out for "little more work". But, doing a play is a distant possibility. That he would love to act in one is another story.

"Every actor's dream is to get audience applause in a play. It is instant reaction and there is no retake here. My father acted in Marathi theatre and so I always wanted to learn acting. It is the stage that gave me the idea to act. Though I did Marathi plays at one time, doing even one now becomes a problem for me," he says. Acting in a daily TV soap demands a lot of time. "And then if you want to put into your schedule a play too, you can't possibly give time for its 25 shows in a row. Also, travelling time from one pace to another in Mumbai has really increased. You might not reach the venue on time!," explains Kiran, more popularly known to us as the nice man Om of Kahaani...

Parivaar Award

Voted only last week as the Best Sasur (father-in-law) in the Star Plus's Parivaar Awards this year, Kiran says he is looking for yet another role in a tube show since the serial Kehna Hai Kuch Mujhko on Sony TV with Pallavi Joshi went off air some time back. That was a good serial but it is the ratings of a show that decide its fate. In a way, it is sad," he laments. And it is just this craving for pure creative work that makes him miss stage-acting.

But then, he also believes in looking at the future with "a lot of hope." "My final destination is films. I want to do good character roles. Though nothing is in my hand right now," he lays bare his cards.

Well, to shine in Bollywood, a dash of luck is what you need first and we sure know that Kiran has learnt his first lessons by now.
