Set to dazzle

Research went into the creation of jewellery for `Paheli'

ONE OF A KIND Shah Rukh Khan and Rani in the film

This is the time of corporatisation of films. One way of looking at the phenomenon is the transparency that comes into the financial aspect of filmmaking. The flip side is of course the product placements. Industry watchers dubbed the latest Bond film, Die Another Day, "Buy Another Day" for the amount of placements. Closer home Subhash Ghai's insufferable Yaadein was christened a three-hour commercial. Lesser mortals go in for tie-ups and the latest in brand barter is Amol Palekar's Paheli and Tanishq, which has designed the jewellery for the film. The film is Palekar's interpretation of a Vijaydan Detha's story Duvidha, which in turn is based on a Rajasthani folk tale.

The story is about a girl, Lacchi (Rani Mukherjee ) who is married to a man who has no time for her. On the day of their wedding, the husband sets off on a five-year-business trip.

There is a ghost (Shah Rukh Khan) who falls in love with Lacchi and takes on the form of the husband and enters Lacchi's life. After five years, the husband returns and the riddle that the players in the drama have to crack is, who is the real husband. Talking about designing the jewellery, Tusheeta Kurien, Senior Designer, said, "Amol Palekar and Sandhya Gokhale (screenplay and dialogue) briefed us on the look they wanted. They even told us the colour palate of the film, which is very warm with a lot of orange, pink, red and ochre."

"The movie is based in 18th Century Rajasthan in the Marwadi community. We designed the jewellery keeping in mind the character and the environment. For a flamboyant character like Rani's, we created jewellery that stands out while for Juhi who plays a widow in the film, the jewellery was more subtle."

"As a new bride, Rani's jewellery had a lot of kundan and meenakari work. We colour co-ordinated the jewellery with Rani's outfits. We did a lot of borlas, baju bands, anklets, waistbands and rings. Tusheeta says her favourite piece of jewellery for Rani was "the huge kadas with gold tassels with tiny emeralds."

"We did not ignore the men and Shah Rukh's conch shell pendant with kundan work on it is a unique one of its kind piece. We also had a pendant with a huge black diamond."Whether Palekar manages to crack the puzzle in the box office remains to be seen, but the jewellery is all set to dazzle.
