TIME FOR TAMASHA A scene from Dabholkar's play

Simi Garewal, Sonia Gandhi, Lalu Prasad, Mallika Sherawat, the Ambani brothers, Hrithik Roshan, Shah Rukh Khan, Sanjeev Kapoor, Manish Malhotra, Vajpayee, McDonalds...they were all the butt of ridicule in Bharat Dabholkar's play `Tamasha Mumbai Ishtyle', staged at The Music Academy recently by Shrishti, an organisation working for the cause of the underprivileged.

The `Ishtyle' was evident in the comedy (of errors), the language (Hindi, English and Marathi), the storyline (folk and modern) and the music (folk and hip-hop). As is typical of Mumbai-theatre, there were unrestrained comments about subjects such as sex and parentage, which usually are taboo. Even the politically powerful were not spared.

Written and directed by Bharat Dabholkar and produced by Ashvin Gidwani, the story is simple and is woven around the inability of the King and Queen of Bharatpur to have children.

Being loved by his countrymen, two of the King's closest aides - the wiseman and hawaldar - try their best to solve their sovereign's desire by bringing in doctors, sadhus and magicians. And this gives rise to several comic situations, among them being the King getting pregnant due to a wrong prescription by a sadhu. The comedy, laced with satire, was lapped up by the audience. Dabholkar's regulars such as Vinay Joglekar, Sameer Chogle, Vihang Nayak and Gitanjali came up with some well-timed dialogue.
