ASK SHAHNAZ
I suffer from heavy hair loss. I have a regular oil massage and apply henna and shampoo twice a week. Do I need to use a conditioner?
There are several reasons for hair loss. Among these are dandruff or a related scalp condition, thyroid imbalance, nutritional deficiencies, illness, stress and so on.
Post-pregnancy and menopausal hair loss is also common. So, try to identify the cause of your hair loss. If your problem is acute, you should avoid massage, as the roots are already weak.
Instead, apply pure coconut oil on the scalp and leave it overnight. Next morning, wash with a mild herbal shampoo. Do this once a week. If you are using henna, you do not need to use any other conditioner. You need to use a good hair tonic and vitaliser everyday.
Try to include fresh fruits, salads, sprouts and yoghurt in your diet and ask your doctor to prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements. Ask your doctor if you need a thyroid imbalance test. It can be detected through a blood test and can be corrected with medication. Do deep breathing exercises daily.
I have oily skin and wash my face three or four times a day. I also have lot of blackheads. What should I do?
Do not wash your face with soap and water more than twice a day. This disrupts the normal acid-alkaline balance. However, rinse it with plain water several times a day. Blackheads are caused by oil getting clogged in the pores.
Therefore, daily deep pore cleansing is essential. First use a medicated soap or cleanser, rinsing well with water. Then use a facial scrub.
You can mix rice flour with curd and apply it on the area with blackheads. Rub gently and rinse with water. If there are stubborn blackheads, you will have to get them removed at a beauty parlour. Then follow the daily treatment with facial scrub.
I am a 27-year-old married woman. I use lipstick only once a week. But now my lips have turned dark. What do I do?
Perfumes and other ingredients in cosmetics can cause a photosensitive (as a result of the sun's rays) reaction, leading to discolouration. Ensure that you use lipsticks of good quality. Apply an almond-based cream daily on the lips and leave it on overnight.
Or apply almond oil daily at night and leave it on. Along with this, apply milk or milk cream daily on the lips and wash it off after half an hour.
I have dry and sensitive skin. Some areas are rough and red, with white flakes. What is the remedy?
Your skin is dehydrated and you have a condition of dry-skin sensitivity. The rough, red and flaky areas have become dehydrated, due to habitual lack of moisture.
This can happen due to constant exposure to air conditioners or excessive sun-exposure. Stop using soap completely. Use a cleansing gel for dry skin, wiping the skin with moist cotton wool. At night, after cleansing, apply a nourishing cream and massage it into the skin. Remove the cream with moist cotton wool. Then apply a liquid moisturiser on the dry areas. Applying honey on the face once daily and washing off after 15 minutes will also help. Also use a sunscreen with a high SPF before going out in the sun.
My daughter, aged 10 years, has lice in her hair. Is there some home remedy to get rid of them?
The easiest way is to use special shampoos, which are available for lice infestations. You should be able to get them at a chemist's shop. After washing the hair, use a fine-toothed comb to comb the hair thoroughly. The nits (eggs) will have to be removed physically. As a home remedy, grind fenugreek (methi) seeds and add some coconut oil to it. Apply it on the scalp and hair. Wash the hair with water after an hour. Or, you can add half-teaspoon neem oil to one tablespoon of coconut oil and apply on the scalp and hair. Do this twice a week.
