IN A NEW ROLE Smriti Irani
Dare to ask her about women empowerment and Smirti Irani will pat your back in a crowd where female scribes are a majority. "Look, they are outnumbering you guys," reacts the lady, who has proved her prowess not only in histrionics but in politics and social activism as well. She is Tulsi, a modern bahu, who is deep rooted in the heart of every Indian middle class woman.
Smirti Irani has now donned a new role as goodwill ambassador of the WHO's ORS campaign. Being the "Child Care Angel" of ORS, she says, "It's important to be a good person, whether you are an artiste, politician or a social worker. Being a public figure brings along a sense of social responsibility as people look upon you for inspiration."
Besides TV serials, she is into theatre with her own group Catch 22 Entertainment. She denies any plan of venturing into Bollywood in the near future as she has "enough tasks which come before it". Apart from USAID, she has been associated with "People for Change", "Helpage India" and several other NGOs.
Although she is an active BJP member, contrary to parliamentary politics, Smirti believes in "politics which focuses on health care, sanitation and drinking water". "I don't care about others. All I care about is what I do in my own life. When it comes to taking social initiatives, I don't prescribe that politics, religion or profession should divide people," she says.
