Architectural lines inspire artist Raju Durshettiwar, whose works are on show at Prakrit Arts

INTERPLAY OF HUES A painting by Raju Durshettiwar
In his first solo painting exhibition at the Prakrit Arts, Raju Durshettiwar showcases his works inspired by architecture and the play of light on buildings. He has always been interested in geometrical forms in architecture; as the light falls on a structure it creates attractive variations of shapes and colours. It creates a sense of oscillation and hence, the title of the show "Oscillation". Says Raju: "Whatever exists around me stimulates my mind and heart; each stroke explores the dynamics of space on surface."
Abstract imagery
Though one can recognise arches and steps with the verticality of architecture being stressed through lines, the imageries obtain a certain abstraction with controlled interplay of hues. The combination and juxtaposing of colours are quite attractive and effective in the acrylics on canvas and paper, painted using both the brush and the palette knife.
In some works, the lower half appears to be a reflection of the structure above in a pool of water, while in some others, the use of reds and yellows gives the feeling of a building being on fire. Nevertheless, some paintings tend to look almost similar, except for the variation of colours. Raju claims he is aiming for a dialogue between the artist and his creations and the viewer.
A native of Yeotmal in Maharashtra, Raju obtained his degree in Fine Arts (Applied) from Government Chitrakala Mahavidyalaya, Nagpur University. He also received the Junior Fellowship from the Department of Culture, Government of India. He has been living and working at the Cholamandal Artists' Village near Chennai for more than a decade now.
After exploring light-scapes through windows and infinite forms, he is now concentrating on architectural forms.
The show is on at the gallery (ph: 52082078) till August 3, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
