Bulbs and blooms

Eucharis flowers are a pretty sight

SPLENDID WHITE Eucharis

Belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family, Eucharis is also called the Amazon Lily. A semi-shady position and plenty of water will help the bulb bloom, as will a watery does of fertilizer.

The broad Hosta-like leaves are attractive in themselves, but the effect of the white flowers is spectacular, as is their light perfume, which is all pervasive. .

The potted bulb may be placed on its side, while being rested - this will help the bulb flower easily.

Propagation is done by separating the bulbous offsets. E. sanderi is a native of Columbia and Ecuador, happy in its forest habitat and quite equally happy here in the Tropics. The white flowers are green veined, nodding downward and the filaments have a blunt tooth on each side.

The E. grandiflora has creamy white flowers, starry in appearance with six, well-shaped petals and a greenish cupped centre.
