TECH SAVVY Computers or cell phones, guys love their gizmos

A new brotherhood of gadget freaks is in the making. They go by the name of techno sexual. A man with an arsenal of gadgets — iPod, digital camera, PDA (personal digital assistant), Bluetooth enabled handset and landlines, location-free televisions and more, who is in touch with his geek side. Move over metro sexual and retro sexual, as the stylish, sophisticated and tech savvy guy arrives as the new male ideal.

"Geek is the new chic," says Ricky Montalvo who leads a team of Silicon Valley professionals and is founder of the techno sexual movement.

"Back in the day, a woman wanted a guy who can change the oil, rake the leaves, and clean out the rain gutters. The new ideal male is a guy who can troubleshoot the household DSL or get last-minute movie show times on his PDA while on a date."

"A metro sexual man may be seen at an NBA game one night and an art gallery opening the next. We take it one step further by adding technology. A techno sexual man may not need to go to the NBA game because he can get highlights and scores via SMS or by browsing the web on his PDA while at the art gallery," explains Ricky.

Universal lifestyle

The techno sexual lifestyle is universal, he adds.

With iPod Photo (60 gb), Griffin iTalk voice recorder, Klipsch ProMedia 2.0, Cambridge Audio 5.1, Vonage VoIP phone, Meo MP3 player, Dell OptiPlex SX280 (USF, ultra small form factor) with Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, Blaupunkt Velocity Reference Series, Pioneer sub woofers, three way speakers (Pioneer, with two TS 2650), amplifiers and motion detection sensors for the car, and a Wi-Fi enabled home to go with it, Nikhil Irukulla, managing director, Path Finder, is waiting for his new Klipsch iFi shipment from the U.S.

If he is not calling his international clients, find him on the Internet surfing through the URLs for what's new on online stores.

"I buy the latest that hits the U.S. market. I also get newsletters that keep me posted on the new gadgets," he says. Anuj, an emcee, despite a hectic schedule manages to stay clued in on the latest in gadgets. His current obsession is his Nokia N-Gage gamer. "I am a music and video game freak. My gaming phone has probably one of the loudest speakers. The handset has to be an entire entertainment module rather than a connecting and messaging instrument," he says.

It's not just men who are jumping on the gizmo-surfing bandwagon. Working wirelessly at a café, equipped with PDA, there are increasing numbers of girls who are joining in. Interior designer Preksha agrees, "I have a Blue tooth GPRS enabled handset. It's easy to use and easier to Google," she says.

With more people getting clued into mobile blogging, podcasting and the rest, the techno sexual trend is geared to stay beyond its froufrou fad status.

Bluetooth enabled digital 5.8 Ghz cordless landline sets that mirror the design of a clamshell handset, Pocket Media Assistants (PMA), limited edition mobile phones and the works will only fuel passion for gizmos in the days ahead.
