A dash of style

Inderpal and Jasmeet demonstrate how use of Jaipur stone, fawn curtains and gulmohur flowers can add a dash of style to your adobe, says HARJEET KAUR ALLAGH

The home of Inderpal Singh and Jasmeet Kaur is located amidst a neat row of bungalows in the tranquil Guru Nanak colony. The area exudes an air of privacy since most of their family members and relatives live in the same street.

The façade is done up in pleasant Jaipur stone and the cool patio doubles up as a garage and a sit-out with comfortable, cushioned cane chairs. A small lawn with plants all around the boundary adds a dash of greenery. The living room is majestic, plush and comfortable. The sofas are in a rare, light chocolate colour, satin upholstery with a matching divan with bolsters and side stools too in the same print. A huge chubby faced doll sits on the sofa with her arms wide open in a welcoming gesture. The self-embossed fawn curtains are offset by a tapestry of a pair of beautiful storks on a jute background. The center table is the latest steel, chrome and dark glass feature. On its center is a crystal bowl full of bright red gulmohur flowers floating in the water. A dark glass vase is filled with silk roses along with an assortment of aromatic wax and gel candles. A sideboard is ornamented with statues of Egyptian pharaohs and queens. Behind it is an eye-catching painting of a maiden seated in the Mysore palace. Indoor plants like acacia and crotons bring a piece of nature into the living room. The light from a gilt and glass chandelier with matching wall brackets gives the room a distinct aura.

Rosewood wonder

An entire wall has a cabinet stacked with crystal, bone china and ceramic crockery and on its ledge is a cutlery stand in porcelain of a duck pulling a cart. The dining table is in rosewood with comfortable and stylish chairs in matching upholstery with the sofas.

A steel framed wicker basket holds fresh fruits on the table. A small alcove has the washbasin with a cast iron frame for the looking glass. A huge painting of the Golden Temple in all its grandeur adorns the wall behind the table.

The kitchen is very spacious with a huge attic and an attached store. It has marble worktops and a huge storage space that contains a refrigerator, a washing machine, a griller and a microwave. Jasmeet loves to try out new recipes churned out in the cookery shows on TV. The chef in her has a competitor in Muskaan, her 11- year-old daughter who is also interested in cooking.

Going with trenz

The master bedroom has dark melamine finished beds with attached side tables and a low headboard, which has family portraits, a table clock and a night lamp on it.

The dressing table is flanked by closets and a gold foil picture of Guru Nanak adorns the wall. Inderpal likes to watch news channels at bedtime while Jasmeet never misses the daily soaps. Inderpal Singh is a businessman; dealing in auto spares.

He keeps himself fit by walking and working out at the gym at Vijayawada Club and for socializing Nukkad serves as a platform. "I like to go with the trend. Picking up the latest fashions in the market and collecting fancy shoes is my passion,'' chirps Jasmeet.

Surinder Kaur is the head of the family and Inderpal is her youngest son. She likes to start her day with daily prayers and believes in simple living and high thinking.

Her room has a single cot and a cane sofa set with a matching center table. Grey furnishings and drapes look serene and soothing. A dark maroon enameled bed with a bright sunny bedspread, brighter printed curtains, a computer console, a TV set and a CD system enliven the kids' room. A pink and white inflatable chair has a rag doll sitting on it.

The walls are spattered with colorful posters of Katrina Kaif and John Abraham— 19-year-old Karan's favorites. A poster of Barbie and a collage of Muskaaan's photographs also find place on the wall.

While pursuing BBM, he manages to take time off for listening to some good music, watching movies, surfing the net and keep pace with the changing trends.

Muskaan likes playing with dolls and watching cartoons.
