Lizard becomes Wizard, no one notices Goruchaka, not even the nosey cousin Ravi and... things begin to happen. They climb the coconut tree, visit a palace, and make friends with an army of ants... In this adventurous story, Mridu comes across as the girl next door, even the older ones may feel nostalgic about days spent at their grandparents' house, trying to avoid gooey oil baths and eating mango pachdi always at the wrong time!
The Unprincess: Written and illustrated by Manjula Padmanabhan (published by Puffin Books. Rs. 135. Ages 8 and above): Alternate fairy tales, unusual twists! Three (un)princesses braver, bolder and more dashing than those shy-girly traditional princesses waiting for prince charming. And story always ends... living happily ever after! Enjoy three stories and admire the three heroines: Urmila, who is so ugly that she makes people swoon; Kavita, who can beat up a giant, and Sayoni, who has the magical power to tame nightmares. Adventurous stories with funny twists, for readers of all ages.
The Puffin Book of Legendary Lives: Meena Arora Nayak (published by Puffin Books, Rs. 250. Ages 10 and above): A collection of 24 stories. A mixture of history and fiction that takes us to a wonderland surrounded by Mughal emperor Akbar, his musician Tansen; a beautiful devadasi, Amrapali who persuaded Ajatashatru to become a Buddhist; a highway robber Valmiki who became the poet of one of the world's greatest epics... A well-researched book which makes best use of both fact and fiction, going back to the oral stories rewritten and re-told, a good way of approaching history and India's past.
