Easing traffic congestion

Role of police

Easing traffic congestion is possible. We need to broaden the roads wherever there is space and slow-moving vehicles such as bullock carts and thallu vandis should not be allowed on busy roads. The rule that restricts the entry of heavy vehicles into the city during the peak hours needs to be enforced strictly. We already have around 100 traffic marshals, who patrol stretches of roads. If there is traffic congestion in any part, they can be contacted on 103 and they will help clear it. They fine people who have parked vehicles in non-parking zones and deckers stow away vehicles that have been illegally parked. Illegal hawkers and encroachments are being removed by the police. Pavements should be left to the pedestrians, or else they too will add to the motorists' woes.

Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Greater Chennai
