Amarjeet Singh Bakshi and his family live on the second floor of Sudershan apartments in the posh Brindavan colony in Labbipet. Not willing to allow space constraint impinge on their unity, they merged two apartments to facilitate comfort for their large family.

The living room is formal and has comfortable sofas in grey and neatly arranged suede upholstery with maroon brocade cushions. Curtains in ivory and grey printed flowers complement the sofas and lift the ambience and relaxing on the sofa are huge stuffed toys in the shape of a cute baby elephant and a green frog.

The center table has a steel base with a dark glass top that has curios like a twin dagger set, a brass bowl and fresh flowers on it. Behind the sofas is a brass pot filled with bright orange flowers while roses adorn the vase on a corner stand.

A divan with bolsters is placed alongside the sofas and a lovely painting with an antique frame adorns one wall.

Flower power

An arch with curtains separates the living room from the sitting area that has sofas in maroon faux leather.

A table in the center has a wooden base and a glass top with floating rose petals in a crystal bowl. An entire stretch of wall is adorned with a painting of the awesome Golden Temple and a tall brass pot is filled with fresh white coconut flowers. The family gathers here to spend some light moments together.

Adjacent to the sitting area is the dining hall that has a teakwood table covered with lace and chairs to match with and a bowl of fresh fruits in the center. The drapes are cream in shade and have light brown valences. A wall-to-wall cabinet is filled chock-a-block with crystal and chinaware.

The dining area is connected to the kitchen where the tiles and cabinets are white, with chocolate brown edging. Gagneet, the elder daughter-in-law, keeps herself engaged in cooking different varieties for the family members. Her younger sister, Puneet, is married to her brother-in-law, and assists her. Gagneet's businessman husband loves to wield the ladle on Sundays. The puja room is done up in spotless white that adds to the air of divinity.

Harmonious effect

The master bedroom belongs to Amarjeet Singh and Ravinder Kaur and has a huge bedstead covered with a pleasant ivory and green bedcover. The headboard and side tables have a goldfish bowl on one side and a telephone on the other. The light netted curtains are blended harmoniously with the ambience of the room while a deep maroon carpet provides the room a refined touch. The wardrobes have an attached dressing table. The Bakshis have been pioneers in dealing with two wheeler spare parts for many years and have now ventured into three wheeler parts also. Amarjeet Singh leads a semi-retired life by delegating a major part of the business to his two sons. He and his wife Ravinder, start the day by visiting the Gurudwara at 6 a.m. He then goes for his walk and practices yoga at home.

"Biji" is the family head. She is old but active and her room is full of toys of her grandchildren who cling on to her most of the time. The wardrobes in the room are have lively bright nursery stick-ons.

Elaborate carvings

The room of the elder son Sandeep Singh and Gagneet, is elaborately carved and has inlaid beds and a matching dressing table. The bed is covered with a light pink embroidered bedspread, with bright red cushions in the shape of the sun and a beetle! The side tables have books on one side and soft toys on the other. A computer corner in the room is where Sandeep spends a lot of time playing games. Self-printed, satin curtains add glamour to the room.

Puneet loves to shop, watch movies and freak out with friends. Her room has laminated beds with a brown tie and dye-embroidered bedspread. Sunny cushions and a stuffed tiger occupy the bed. A TV is prominent in one corner. The huge dressing table shows Puneet's liking for dressing up. Their son, Gur Rahmat Raj Singh, a toddler is finicky about clothes. The boy loves fast cars, bikes and watching W.W.F on TV.
