Still Waters run deep

Still Waters, one of Bangalore's prolific theatre groups, is celebrating four years of performance and playwriting with a theatre festival called Influences — A Festival of Vijjay Nair's Plays, from September 13 to 18.

Earlier this year, Vijjay Nair, the founder of Still Waters, was the recipient of the Charles Wallace award and was the writer in residence at the University of Kent, Canterbury. After three months in the land of Shakespeare, he was inspired to pay tribute to the Bard of Avon with Raja Lahiri, a free adaptation of King Lear that will be the crowning glory of this festival.

Raja Lahiri is directed by Preetam Koilpillai and will be staged every day from September 15 at 7.30 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday there will be another show of the same play at 11 a.m.

Before this production however, Vijjay Nair pays tribute to two other playwrights who have influenced him in his writing — Mahesh Dattani and Tennessee Williams with two other plays — Weeds, directed by Abhishek Majumdar which is opening the festival on Tuesday, and Shut the Door which Nair has directed himself, which will be staged on Wednesday.

Another part of the festival includes a series of seminars and film screenings based on the influences of the above-mentioned playwrights. The films screened will include Dance Like a Man, A Streetcar Named Desire, 1,000 Acres, Throne of Blood, Maqbool and Kaliyattam.

Bangalore's theatre luminaries, including Arundhati Raja, Prakash Belawadi and Kirtana Kumar, will present the seminars. There is also a unique platform performance contest for school students in the evenings just before the commencement of the main play.

While the seminars and film screenings will be held at the Centre for Film and Drama on Millers Road, the platform performances and the plays themselves will be staged at Ranga Shankara.

Tickets will be available at Crossword, Café de Paris (Alliance Francaise) and at the venue.

To register for the seminars or to book tickets for the plays, call 98802-60101 or 98453-73547 or email harlequin.ent@gmail.com.
