DWARFED BY THE MONOLITH The Mahamastakabhisheka takes place every 12 years

The works of ace photographer K. Venkatesh will be on display at an exhibition entitled Panorama of Gomateshwara, a colourful preview of the 16-day anointing ceremony of the huge monolith due to take place at Shravanabelagola between February 8 and 19, 2006.

The 57-foot statue is of Gomateshwara, i.e., Bahubali, son of Adinath, who was the first of the 24 Jain Thirthankaras who attained nirvana at a young age.

Venkatesh's photographs portray the temples atop the hills, the panoramic landscape, the Digambara monks and so on. His objective is to create interest in the unique architecture of the Jains, their rock-cut caves and temples built over the centuries, and to spread awareness of the the Mahamastakabhisheka.

The exhibition is on at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat, Kumara Krupa Road, between September 12 and 14, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
