COOKING UP DELICACIES At the Goodfoodline tasting session
"A slice-of-heaven at down-to-earth prices," says Vaidy as he gives me a wedge of pizza to taste. He could well be referring to the Goodfoodline tasting session, which was held at the Taj Connemara. In response to my open invitation a line up of the city's foodie-talent turned up to give us a taste of their specialities.
They had set up the dishes, chocolates, desserts, pickles and squashes, which were proof of their culinary skills and enterprise. Their enterprising spirit never ceases to amaze me. Ever since I started writing this column, I find that there is new talent to discover each time I hold a tasting session. The information we gather is unbelievable.
From housewives who work from home to groups of women who make homestyle squashes and pickles and those who supply food to companies and marriages, these sessions help me learn more about where to get what in Chennai.
Everything is available here homemade plantain stem juice, painted chocolates, sprouted methi pickle, whole wheat pizzas, true-blue Thai, Vietnamese and Malaysian food. And you can get a taste of it all at a single session, where Taj's general manager Digvijay Singh (a chef by profession and a dyed-in-the-drool foodie) is also present. Squashes and Andhra pickles by S. Suganthi and Rena Riaz, Hansa Vora's Gujarati khakhra and masalas, Madan Bagri's Rajasthani mix sangri, Mythili Anantharaman's kozukattais, Singaporean Ana Nalapat's magical South East Asian fare,Farida Ghouse's stuffed rotis and shammi kababs, Shobha Gwalani's eggless brownies, steamed bajra muthis and puran polis by buddies Bharati Pujara, Jayshree Chandan and Vishala Sanjeev and Jehara Begum's homestyle food. Imagine the variety! We also came to know about N.S. Uday Kumar and Daraes Dalal's professional industrial catering outfit, the "earn and learn" courses conducted by professor Nataraj of the National Institute of Hospitality Management offers and the gentleman who supplies pure Thai food ingredients!
I still haven't told you about Reshma Patel and her popular home-delivered pizzas or the pizzas made by Vaidy and Goby (Vaidynathan and Gobinath) or Monica Suri's chocolates. Have I got you excited? Wondering how to call them and get a taste of their food? Sorry, you'll have to wait and keep watching this space every Wednesday for more information on them.
