Er, it's them: those nice Backstreet Boys

The new Backstreet Boys video startled fans world over. Kevin and Brian of the band explain the idea behind the spoof

RADICAL PROPS The boys sporting their new outfits

With songs like "Quit Playing Games", "All I Have To Give" and "I Want It That Way", the Backstreet Boys boast a female fan following outnumbering any other band in the world. With their new album, Never Gone, the chocolate boys of pop are back.

That's what you thought!

Backstreet Boys took the entire music world by surprise recently when the video for their new single, "Just Want You To Know", hit music television channels. For the first time ever, the video features the boys (Kevin, Howie D, AJ, Nick and Brian) as rock stars, sporting long crazy hairdos, bandanas, tattoos and the rest. The computer-generated makeover of the Boys accompanies a track which itself has an underlying rock flavour in its music. Says Kevin, "We felt we had done many types of videos, but we hadn't done a spoofy one. We'd done the pretty boy image. We'd done the good boy image. We'd also done the bad boy image. We wanted to go back in time a bit to do the good eighties, and create a good video based on the music of that time."

But what's the spoof all about?

The video reflects the reckless and carefree lifestyles of rock stars, complete with excessive unwanted aggression in the name of rebellion and scandalous personal lives. Though it does not spoof any particular band or artiste, it criticises in a light vein the entire spectrum of rock artistes of the '80s, whom even today an enviable number of music lovers swear by.

Kevin goes on to say: "We wrote the treatment to the video ourselves and then got in touch with the director." And Brian sums it up by saying: "We're ecstatic that we did this video. It's something we are really proud of."

Well, the Boys have surprised us all right. But are hardcore fans of rock and heavy metal thrilled to bits?
