Recently on a mild winter evening hotel Taj Man Singh witnessed people from various fields of art and culture. The occasion was the launch ceremony of the official website of Indian Council For Cultural Relations (ICCR) by Karan Singh, President ICCR. Singh called it an important initiative that will work for the public interest and is accessible by people living in any corner of the world. "Our purpose is to bring forward our rich cultural heritage and cater to the needs of people across the globe," said Singh.
According to Pavan K Varma, Director General, ICCR the website will also acquaint people with various events, round the clock.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India, founded ICCR on April 9, 1950. It aims at encouraging and improvising the new with classical as well as the folk forms of India's cultural expression. The last five decades have witnessed the most exciting period in Indian literature, music and dance. Singh reiterated, "ICCR is trying to revive the Indian culture through Indian languages and cinema".
Paying tribute to Maulana Azad, Singh said, "We owe the vibrant body to his vision and efforts." Today ICCR has more than 19 cultural centres including Cairo, Durban, Johannesburg, Colombo, Tashkent and London, to name a few. It also has regional centres spread across India in major cities like Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram.
