Our hypocrisy

C.K. Meena's Like a virgin (MetroPlus, December 9, 2005) was well written, pointing out the importance given to virginity. This is one of the main causes that make parents fear for the prospects of a girl's marriage, leading to the practice of preventing the birth of a daughter, and marriage being considered the "be all and end all" in a girl's life.

This kind of thinking reflects in the society's ready acceptance of a stepmother concept, and not the stepfather. In the West, men come forward to marry single mothers, widows or divorcees with children from the previous marriage. Imagine our men in our society taking this step! This is a cultured society which worships women as goddesses and give men two wives!
