A tête-à-tête with Anand Chhatpar, the young CEO of Indian origin to feature on the Best Entrepreneurs under 25 Business Week poll

Twenty-four-year-old Anand Chhatpar heads a company that has innovation as its mission. Called Brain Reactions, it offers business ideas and marketing services to Fortune 100 companies with Bank of America and United Nations for clients. The young CEO recently featured in the top five of the Best Entrepreneurs under 25, and only Indian at that, in Business Week poll in the US.

The Wisconsin-Madison graduate has come a long way after his matriculation and diploma from a government polytechnic in Mumbai before he moved to US for research programme. Today, with a degree in computer engineering, four patents and three more pending, Chattpar is the Young Turk on the American soil. "At bachelors level here you don't get that kind of opportunity. Even at IITs you are given books and problems to solve. Knowledge Process Outsourcing is the big buzzword worldwide. As a country we are well-equipped to emerge as global knowledge leaders. The scenario has changed from chalta hai to let's make it happen. But you need to make changes in the outlook. Companies here are focussed on cost cutting and look at employees as commodity, and that must change," he observes during his recent visit to town for a meeting with ISB.

His visit also coincides with his promotion of his brainchild Innovation Trip - a seven-day workshop in the US for Indian professionals, which includes visits to premier B-Schools, workshops and more. "The content is customised to meet Indian scenario. We have authorities speaking on issues such as employee retaining and anti poaching that is a huge problem here. As also creating systems that help engage people in the organisation's purpose, aligning organisational capabilities for growth and customer centred innovations based on ethnographic research," he says. And who can participate in the workshop? "Directors, project managers, vice-presidents form HR, R&D, operations, delivery managers and bright young staff in a company. The workshop is priced at USD 7900 and includes accommodation, travel within US, workshop and training material. We will be having workshops starting April first week," he says.

As for Chhatpar, the Innovation Trip is the first step to establish base in homeland before he comes back. "The new trend is of people coming back with latest knowledge from Sillicon Valley. There is something about staying with people you have grown up with. Certainly you have started to see that shift with the amount of progress the country has made in the past five years," he reflects.
