A happy outing

Annakshetram wants to bring a smile on the faces of the neglected children with its breakfast service

FOR A CAUSE It was a weekend to remember for the children

It was a perfect weekend treat for children from rehabilitation homes. Dressed in their best, they danced to perfectly rehearsed steps, made new friends and went back with happy memories. All at a get-together organised by Annakshetram (mobile), a voluntary organisation that provides daily breakfast to at least 100 orphaned children with help from sponsors.

In the absence of an outside sponsor, members take turns to supply food.

"We wanted to celebrate our first anniversary and the best way to do it is by sharing our joy with the children of various ashrams to whom we have been providing breakfast regularly," says Kishore T. Dattani, founder of Annakshetram.

Children from Sharanalaya, Don Bosco Anbu Illam, Coimbatore Seva Nilayam, Mariyalaya and Sadguru Sevashram came together at Rajasthani Sangh recently to participate in the celebrations.

They also got an opportunity to showcase their latent talents — some danced to popular numbers, others chose to sing while the rest entertained the audience with mimicry. They relished a sumptuous lunch and took home a lot of goodies — clothes, pencil boxes and pens.

The magic show that followed saw flowers being turned into birds, rabbits jumping out of hats and roses blooming from a pack of cards. The children enjoyed every bit of it.

"Now, we also try and provide dinner to these children whenever possible. Our focus is to cover more ashrams and more people. We need sponsors so that we can get a dedicated vehicle for Annakshetram services. Right now, members take turns and use their cars to deliver food. We also want more people to join us," Dattani adds.

More than 30 ashrams and rehabilitation homes run for children within the city limits have been identified for the purpose.

Since people want to sponsor food only during special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries and weddings, the organisers want more volunteers to ensure regular supply of food.

When you want to donate food, all you have to do is make a phone call. The Annakshetram mobile comes to your doorstep, collects the food and distributes it in the ashram of your choice. "Providing food to the needy is a noble service and we want participation from the public," Dattani adds.
