LIP SMACKING Rich n' creamy PHOTO: K. ANANTHAN
A month ago, tonnes of almonds, nuts, apricots and fruits were doused in the fizz of rum and brandy and left to ferment for Christmas at The Residency. Now that the carols are on, the bells jingling and Santa ready, those countless nuts and fruits are buried deep within layers of cream and icing.
Exotic looking cakes and tarts with equally exotic names and inspired from the recipes of exotic locales will send those with a sweet tooth on a rampage. Executive Chef Ashok Kumar has garnered recipes from across the globe and adapted them to the Indian palate.
From the land of queens and kings comes Elizabeth Gateaux. Homemade cream is whipped with milk and garnished with minced pineapple and powdered nuts in this speciality from England. Long after you have had Swiss Engadine Nut Torte, the sweetness of honey lingers on and its crunchy base gives the taste of a biscuit.
Pineapple seems to rule the roost as the Ice Parfait Torte from Germany and the Italian Zabactione Marzipan have the heavy flavour of the fruit in it. Plum cakes rich with fruits and the traditional Christmas speciality Yule Log, complete with the miniature Santa, are found in plenty.
The Mexican tarts are rich with layers of chocolate interspersed with sponge and truffle. The honey almond mousse looks fetching with small scoops of the mousse sitting pretty on chocolate cups.
The 14 varieties of Christmas and New Year delicacies are priced between Rs 35 and Rs 450.
The Residency is also organising a Children's Carnival today. Children can have fun with magic shows, fun games, and dance. And if your feel like taking a bite in between, hop into the food stalls which will be open throughout the day.
Entry tickets are priced at Rs 130 per child.
To enjoy Christmas the traditional way with Roast Turkey with Cranberry sauce, plum pudding and Yule logs, make a visit to Pavilion, the 24-hour coffee shop of the hotel, on Christmas Eve or Christmas.
A Christmas Eve dinner and a Christmas day lunch spread with Musallam Murgh Biryani, Christmas Gateaux and Cappucino Bars will come for Rs. 400.
For all those who want to herald the New Year with food, wine and a rocking dance floor, troop into the hotel.
DJ Param will keep you on your feet through the night and the theme party will be called Blue Masquerade.
Guests can party in blue and will be given masks to wear.
The tickets for the New Year Ball are priced at Rs. 3,000 per couple and Rs. 1,000 for children below 10. Lots of gifts are at stake, including a flight ticket to Bangkok.
On New Year's Eve, the restaurants Pavilion, Chin Chin and the poolside Afghan's Grill will offer a range of delicacies from Chinese, Oriental and Western cuisines.
So, ring in the New Year with kebabs and Biryani by the poolside on a moonlit night.
