FEATHERY PANICLES Pennisetum is usually grown in mixed borders
Pennisetum (fountain grass) is a large species of rhizomous, clump forming, perennial grass found in tropical and warm zones worldwide. They have mid green linear pointed leaves 20" long and are grown for their feathery spike-like panicles of clustered oblong to lance shaped spikelets borne in summer. These spikelets are useful for both fresh and dried arrangements.
Moderately fertile soil
They are usually grown in mixed borders in perfectly light, moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.
Lagurus (Hare's tail), one species of annual grass found in sandy or dry water land, is valued for its ornamental flower heads. It is tufted grass with 20 cm long, lance shaped, flat, narrow, arching leaves. Throughout summer, lagarus bears dense-ovoid to oblong spike-like panicles 6 cm long of soft hairy white often purple tinged spikelets which mature to pale cream buff.
These are grown in good light in sandy, moderately fertile well-drained soil. Cut back dead top growth. It is effective in groups, in an herbaceous or mixed border. The flower heads are also used in fresh or dry arrangements. Pick them before fully mature for drying.
