Signature biryani

Nothing like vintage Hyderabad biryani when hunger calls

COOKED TO PERFECTION The meat that goes into the biryani is marinated with "35 kinds of spices and for three hours"

Hyderabad Biryani House on Victoria Road is synonymous for lip-smacking biryanis. You'll simply love this signature dish with its exotic aroma and tender meat pieces marinated and cooked in beautiful long grained rice and perfect brown colour. The biryani is so popular here that the restaurant has not introduced meals on the menu. Customers keep coming back to feast on the biryanis here. Tukaram the man behind the joint says chefs who make these biryanis have 25 years of experience behind them. "The biryani is cooked in a handi and one can cook only 40 plates at a time." That may explain the fantastic freshness of the dish.

The menu offers four variants of the biryanis — egg, chicken, mutton and vegetable. The meat that goes into the biryani is marinated with "35 kinds of spices and for three hours". The dish is served with mirchi ka salan (a light watery gravy made from green chillies and kaju power) and raita. But it is best to eat the dish in its original form, sans the accompaniments so that one gets the authentic taste of biryani.

The menu also includes rumali rotis and a wide range of meat curries. Then there are soups, seafood and tandoori items to relish. Young IT crowd, office goers, students and families just love this place.

For starters there is the veg bullet cooked in Andhra style. It has boiled potatoes and carrots that are minced and mixed with spices before being deep-fried. This dish, priced at Rs. 55 is a must have. Then there are crisp chicken pakodas too. The chicken kebabs are worth mentioning as they are cooked without any food colour, and cooked on a low flame it has a very enchanting flavour. Dum ka murg, a gravy item is another popular dish here. "The meat is halal cut," says Tukaram.

The seafood platter offers delicacies made out of seer fish.

Hyderabad Biryani also offers special family packs for takeaways. This section offers chicken biryani (with four pieces of chicken) and two boiled eggs along with chicken 65 (four pieces) that is priced at Rs. 150.

The mutton biryani comes with eight pieces of mutton, two boiled eggs and the chicken 65. This pack is priced at Rs. 170. These packages, says Tukaram, is popular with the families.

As desserts you can have the qubani ka meetha plain or topped with ice cream. This dish, made with apricots, is said to have digestive enzymes in it.

On your way out you can have the good old Hyderabad beeda and seal your meal. The joint serves ISI marked mineral water and takes catering orders for weddings and parties too.

Hyderabad Biryani House can seat 120 people at a go and is open from 11.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6.45 p.m. to 11.45 p.m.

The restaurant can be contacted on 56979203 or 56979401.
