Motoring made simple
How do you choose an appropriate audio system?
*Check to see if the car manufacturer has already provided factory fitted speakers, even if a music system did not form part of the list of standard equipment.
*Remember to check the depth of the well or cavity provided for mounting the speaker in order to verify whether the new speakers that you located at the store fit your car's empty slots.
*A sub-woofer best highlights low range frequencies such as those from percussion instruments. Mid-range frequencies such as vocals or dialogue are best reproduced in mid-range speakers and high-end frequencies such as from stringed instruments will need the assistance of tweeters.
*If you select two-way or three-way speakers as part of the complement, then a separate set of tweeters may be dispensed with. These speakers already incorporate a tweeter in the package.
*Most car owners' expectations will be met by a head unit that has a built-in pre-amp with a power rating of 25 to 40 RMS per channel and speakers that either add up to that rating or are slightly lower than that.
*Try to locate a head unit or player which has a removable faceplate. In the event of a break-in, the intruder will not be able to access the main component easily.
*If you are buying a head unit that plays CDs, check if it will play MP3 format and .wmv tracks. Check whether the head unit has a front aux-out (auxiliary out) for connecting a MP3 player or iPod at a future date.
*You may want to buy a head unit that also plays DVDs, if you are contemplating installing mini LCD TV screens at a later date for entertaining rear passengers.
*Locating speakers at the rear is not a must, especially if you are the driver. A rich listening experience can be had with four speakers all located in front.
