Set to make her space

Suhasini makes a slow and steady progress towards success

I was never interested in acting and all I know is to dance. Films happened by fluke

LIVING IT UP Suhasini has hit a purple patch in her career

Whoever said that beauty and brains do not go hand in hand, surely have not met Suhasini, the five-film old actress who is climbing the ladder to success slowly and steadily.

The 17-year-old heroine of Chantigadu had tasted success in her first film but isn't overtly ambitious and is happy with what she's doing on screen. "There is very little space for actress in this field," she says with a refreshing candour. "An actress still cannot ask about the story in a film in which she is going to act."

Plum roles

After Chantigadu, she has been inevitably flooded with offers. Yet, contrary to the general grain, she has not jumped at them. Instead, she has decided to take things one at a time.

Currently, she is doing only one Telugu movie Kokila , "I don't like to clutter my plate," she says matter-of-factly. Her conviction is so deep-seated that she has shifted to Chennai for some time to do four films of substance in Tamil one of them being a remake of Yagnam. "I loved working under Ram Narain Sir's baton. He had directed the hit film Punnami Nagu."

Suhasini who comes from Nellore has shifted to Hyderabad to make a career here. "I was never interested in acting and all I know is to dance . Films happened by fluke. Now that I am here let me see how far I can go from here. I would love to do films like Vasantha Kokila and Jagadekaveerudu Athiloka Sundari. I watch a lot of films, mostly old ones because you get to learn a lot."

Suhasini is known for her spontaneity, her total lack of method acting.

"I was a total novice when I came here from Nellore. Jaya madam and Raju garu were my gurus. Their publicity work for Chantigadu made me very popular. Recently I had been to Nellore for a holiday and I happen to see Athadu there.

I had to come out of the theatre in the midst of the screening as the home crowd recognised me and I got too tensed. It feels nice to know that you are a celebrity but I see all this doesn't get into my head. We should never forget our roots."

Suhasini says her father never had a nice impression of the film industry and it had taken time to convince him that it is indeed a nice place after all to make a career.

"He's very happy now and is proud of me. My parents once went to see a Suhasini film and they were so impressed with her that they decided if they ever had a girl, they would name her Suhasini. That's how I happen to retain my name for the screen."

What makes Suhasini tick? Her abiding faith in herself and an ability to internalise new things every day in the film industry.

Whatever you do in life, you must be honest with it. When you accept an offer, you must put everything into it. I always see that I do justice to my roles, Suhasini points out. As it happens, roles are now doing justice to her. Pretty apt, right?
