KANHA AA BHI JA
Friends Video, Rs.35
Rarely do we come across VCDs or audio CDs that are thoroughly undistinguishable or "un-enjoyable", right from the start till the end. They usually will have at least one nice song, a catchy tune, some good music or some lyrics to remember. But here comes a VCD, "Kanha Aa Bhi Ja" that is immeasurably boring, terribly lacklustre and immensely forgettable. Produced and directed by Raj Khanna, the VCD offers eight stereotypical bhajans, rendered by Pradeep Batra in a manner that even jars on the ears at certain trailing notes. The video simply plays a few scenes over and over.
The first bhajan, "Kanha aa bhi ja" sounds more filmy than devotional. "Mohan hai mera", the next song, is sung from the point of view of a devotee-girl who is head over heels in love with Lord Krishna. "Yashoda Ki Pukar" is an allegedly heartrending plea by Yashoda to the runaway child Krishna. "Jo Tha Gita Mein Vachan" implores the Lord to grace us with His divine incarnation and to save the world from its present state of decay (why not from such VCDs too!). "Murli Wala Aaya Re" and "Meri Sun Le Radhe" are clichéd renderings, their humdrum tunes denying the listener the pleasurable highs and lows associated with good music. "Ka Se Kanhaiya" is an attempt at listing the many names of Krishna. The last track "ABCD" is a child's perspective of Lord Krishna's beauty and grace, and easily should bag the nonsensical lyrics award as far as this album is concerned. The one good thing about this CD is its price-tag. May be Lord Krishna's devotees won't mind spending Rs.35 to get His blessings.
FAMILY - TIES OF BLOOD
T-series, Rs.55
The music of this family scored by Ram Sampat does ring in the ears, but not for very long. For some fond of euphonic songs, Janam Janam sung by Sowhmaya Raoh, Arnab Charkravorty and Madhushree may bring some solace. While foot tapping numbers Pyar Bina sung by Ernie and Sohail Kaul and Qatra Qatra sung by Arnab Chakarvorty and Sowmaya Raoh is already among the latest favourites of the discotheques and parties. For long we didn't hear any lullaby, one sung in this film by Sona Mahpatra is beautiful and soothing. It may leave many long for their mothers to sing it for them, irrespective of their age.
