Mid-air madness
Fifty shows a year means lots of airtime for the Crusty Demons; broken bones part of package. What's wild? Well, we can think of a hundred crazy things, but back-flipping a 600 kg snowmobile or a quad bike in the air, and then landing perfectly would be right up there. Or how about letting go of the bike, grabbing the tail piece, and getting back on the bike mid-air, all in the blink of an eyelid? Motorcycles and madness - that's what the Crusty Demons are all about. Brought into the country for a show by beverage, Mountain Dew last month, we think they are the motorsport equivalent of the WWF.
Who are the Crusty Demons?
Steve Mini, Jon Guetter, `Mad' Mike Jones, Jimmy Blaze, Cam Sinclair, Blake Willams, Joel Balchin and Jake Bowen. These Yanks and Aussies are aged between 20 and 30 and do what you could call a combination of motocrossing, freestyle jumps and stunts. But hey, it's so much more than that.
What machinery do they use?
The Yamaha YZ250, Honda CRF250, Suzuki RM250, Kawasaki KX250, the Ski-Doo MXZX440 and the Yamaha YFZ450 ATV.
Total number of bones broken:
Mad Mike wins hands-down with 17, and Balchin is second with six.
How did they start?
Riding on farmlands or simply for fun, these guys perfected the art of moto-style stunts. Their recent Bangalore show included back flips, turndowns (where the bike changes direction in the air) and rock solid (getting off the bike and hanging on to the tail-piece, midair). They also added an Indian connection to the show by bringing out two rickshaws and conducting an impromptu demolition derby. Finally, they also set fire to two junked mobikes. Crazy? Absolutely, wonderfully so.
