The meaning of gifts
The article "Wellness as a gift?" (December 29) reminded me of a dialogue in a film where Kamal Hassan tells his heroine "Parisungradhu kodukkara porulla illa; kodukkara manasula irukku" (It is the thought that matters not the gift). How true! One must appreciate the giver for his worth and not appraise the value of the gift.
Gifts are given for many reasons. Life becomes meaningful when love is shared by giving presents. A wild flower, a scribbled note saying "Happy Birthday Mom/Dad" or a hand-made greeting card from a child will definitely make a parent's day. Similarly when a husband gives gifts to his wife, it is a reassurance of his love and a sign of recognition of the sacrifices she has made for the sake of the family. What better way can there be to show one's appreciation of one's life partner than through gifts? Isn't it true that it is more blessed to give than to receive?
