Sanjeevani in a bottle!

Ever heard of Seabuckthorn? The majority of readers may shake their head in the negative. But if one tells you about how Hanuman searched and brought the life-saving shrub Sanjeevani booti for a wounded Lakshman in the Ramayana, most of you would nod in `yes.' Seabuckthorn has a strong connection with this age-old tale.

A Delhi-based company, M/S Natural Bio-product Limited claims to have retrieved this nitrogen fixing, thorny deciduous shrub to come up with a number of Seabuckthorn health products under the brand name - Hill Berry. Locally known as `Chharma', the shrub is usually found on the riversides and hilltops at an altitude of 2500-4300 metre, usually in Lahual-spiti and Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, upper regions of Uttaranchal and Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh in North-East India. Talking about the benefits of the products, a company note notes the peculiarity of the shrub, which surprisingly has male and female plants. The female plant yields a pea-size and reddish orange to yellow fruits of 1-5 kg per plant. It is 1-400 times rich in vitamin C than any other vegetable or fruit. The benefits of this plant, it says, are abound. For instance, it has vitamin E that varies from 162 to 225 mg/100gm, which is anti-carcinogenic. B-carotene content is also much higher in Seabuckthorn berry oil than many other oils. Flavonoid is found in this shrub and is very effective in curing high blood content, coronary heart problems and enigma. Also, it has vitamin A, B1, B2 and K and its protein content is about 30 per cent.

Digestible too

All these make its oil highly nutritious and digestible with several bioactive substances. The oil is also anti-bacterial, anti-ulcer and regenerates tissues. It will, the note quotes experts in the field, stop the problem of pre-aging too by improving metabolism and also saving health from cold, ulcers, cardiovascular and aging diseases. In 1993, Tetrapak-India, a Swedish subsidiary in India, did the pioneering research in this plant, it mentions. And now that the demand for it is escalating worldwide, the company hopes its products would catch the attention of the health conscious.
