Get set for Andhra Idol hunt

Andhra Idol's the latest on the talent hunt bandwagon

A WANNABLE IDOL

If you haven't already had enough of the numerous talent hunt shows on television, here's something that will keep you satisfied for a while. Idea Andhra Idol, a talent hunt exclusively for people from Andhra Pradesh, had its first preliminaries last week at the Telugu University. What sets this apart from the others of its kind is the fact that contestants can choose from three performing arts to participate in - singing, dancing and acting.

Spread over two days, the prelims saw over 1500 hopefuls. The talented and the not so talented made their way into the auditoriums from as early as 9 a.m. On the second day the selection went on till 9 p.m. and each contestant put his best foot forward - clearly many chose to imitate their favourite icons. The place buzzed with activity as the dancers did the Moonwalk, a la Michael Jackson, while Aishwarya Rai wannabes, Chiranjeevi fans and aspiring Prabhudevas too gave their best shot. In the final stage of the event, six talented winners one man and one woman from each category, will be crowned winners. The bounty includes a cash prize as well as an assured entry into Telugu film industry . The runners up will be absorbed into television serials. Some of the industry's biggest names like M.S. Raju, Shekhar Kammula, Koti, Shyam Prasad Reddy, Lawrence and Trivikram Srinivas have lent their support to the show and contracts have already been signed with a few of them.

The Andhra Idol is in no way connected to the extremely popular American Idol family that has franchisees in 52 countries across the globe. Shravan of Shrisstih, the group that conceptualised this programme says that he has even copyrighted the name to protect himself and the show. After the overwhelming response it has received in Hyderabad, Idea Andhra Idol will be taken to 16 districts across the state before it is brought back to city for another preliminary round. If you didn't catch it last week, make sure you're there to show off your talent when they come back to the city.
