Copper Chimney delivers on its 30-year reputation of serving wholesome food at affordable prices

Bangalore Central seems all set to become the next happening place in town. Especially since the launch of their Copper Chimney rooftop restaurant. And an adjacent lounge bar, HiNT, all spread out over a generous 10,000 sq. ft. in the very heart of Bangalore.

Copper Chimney is a restaurant brand with a formidable reputation, one built up since film icon Dilip Kumar launched the first of its 10 pan-Indian restaurants in Mumbai (then Bombay) on November 26, 1972. They also have a popular presence in places like Chandigarh and Hyderabad.

Shikha Nath, director of Blue Foods, described the essential 200-cover-plus Copper Chimney, "We don't believe in fusion food. Whether in Delhi, Hyderabad or Chandigarh, our Northwest frontier and Punjabi cuisine is simple, consistent and value for money."

She adds, "We first introduced our hallmark show kitchen in Mumbai, where diners can watch kebabs being prepared in the tandoor and charcoal grill. The wine cellar we intend to open here will probably be the best in the city."

Vishnu Prasad, President (South), Pantaloon Retail India Ltd., whose property the mall is, explains: "Our 18-month-old mall here is based on the principles of `Shop, Eat, Celebrate.' We wanted to boost the last two aspects for the family through these ventures."

Why have generations of Indians trooped to Copper Chimney for 30-plus years? Perhaps because, as Nath states: "Two people can eat quite heartily here for about Rs. 400."

What's cooking in its kitchen? A sample array from its vaunted menu brings to our tables a silken chicken reshmi kebab and paneer tikka as starters, with crisp masala papad to munch on while we discuss the state of the world.

A dal maharani with tandoori rotis followed. And then come a chicken makhni, mutton rogan josh and an exceptional jhinga khoa curry (though the menu spelt that `Goa'!). Dum-cooked chicken and vegetable biryanis followed, traditional fare for traditional diners. Other dishes on offer include a burra chop, sabji handi, and desserts that include gulab jamun, kulfi and yes, again ice-cream!

Once the restaurant's Kebab Factory starts rolling in the near future, local diners can look forward to some happy times. For it offers unlimited kebabs, rotis and biryani for Rs. 400 per head.
