Not just an eye for an eye

Some sophisticated, some colourful and some gorgeous, the recent eye wear fashion show saw the latest collection of iinternational brands in India



FOR THAT SHADE Branded eyewear is a fad now

The poet has written reams and reams about romance and love, the painter has created masterpieces on the theme.

In these odes to love, and lovers the world over, there is one infatuation that transcends all divisions - eyes. Eyes, that part of our body that remain unchanged from the cradle to the grave, were feted yet again, and in some style, this past week at a fashion show organised by the Safilo group to launch the latest collection of International brands in India for the year 2006.

Those present to watch this compelling (eye) fashion show held at Hotel Taj Palace, were not disappointed, as top models ambled gracefully on the ramp, donning trendy designs and new styles from leading eye wear brands, which included Polo Ralph Lauren, Yves Saint Laurent, Dior, Diesel, Emporio Armani, Gucci and Giorgio Armani. The glitzy do included several stunners (in terms of eye wear, as well as top-notch models) like Indrani Dasgupta, Tina Chatwal, Sapna Kumar, Joey Mathews, Sonalika Sahay and Krishna Somani besides male models like Navneet.

The brands that took part in the show presented their collection with ιlan, and a very distinct style statement before a fashion conscious set of the Capital's denizens.

Range of designs

Thus, while Yves Saint Laurent presented sunglasses and optical frames comprising sophisticated models with classic, timeless designs, the French Maison's refined style found expression in the quality of materials and the choice of colours.

Similarly, while Dior presented its new collection in Aviadior, Diorair, Dior Airspeed, Dior Cannage and Dior Couture, Gucci's collection of sunglasses featured the master's unmistakable icons, which are used with particular attention to design and detail. An interesting style was on display in Giorgio Armani's Eyewear spring/summer 2006 men's collection, inspired by a portrait of Steve McQueen, which laid an emphasis on sophistication and elegance rather than gaudy ostentation.

Other brands on display included Oxydo's collection and Polo Ralph Lauren. Of late, Delhi has become a veritable hub of fashion and design shows, but while most of these showcase clothes and accessories, it is very rare to have a fashion show dedicated to a segment which otherwise forms only a part of the mainstream.

But going by the response to the eyewear show (and the burgeoning market) it is obvious that Safilo's decision to expand their eyewear market in India, which is already successful since the last four years, is certainly not a bad business proposition.
