Portals of Praise, was an energising experience

As the voices reach a crescendo, the energy in the air is remarkable. The Toc-H Auditorium reverberated in this pulsating energy as 12 groups, who call themselves `portals,' got together to produce energising group music. `Portals of Praise,' a congregation of nearly 150 voices, is the brainchild of Reji Eapen Chandy. This gathering comprises individuals from across Kerala from different age groups.

Reji, who is part of `Glorious', a religious band in Bangalore, explains, "A couple of us associated with `Glorious' formed 12 units in various towns in Kerala, consisting of singers belonging to different churches. Each unit or portal meets at least once a week under the guidance of trainers and practice a range of songs that we have specially arranged for them." From time to time the twelve portals come together, this time culminating in a first of its kind extravaganza, `Portals of Praise.'

"We are working towards the concept of fellowship, of moving from harmony to blending, a blending of voices. We are trying to `lift' everyone's talent to a higher paradigm," Reji informs.

Jeev Mathew, Reji's close associate adds, "The youth today are shifting away from the real to the superficial, owing to a lot of peer pressure. With this coming together we are identifying with the spiritual. Most importantly, each one of us is here with the spirit of giving without expecting anything in return."

Amy Chandy, a 17-year-old from Kottayam confesses that the experience with the portal has changed her for the good. "I used to be a very shy person. But now I have lost my inhibitions." Sharon John from Fort Kochi says, "It is true that we make loads of friends here. But above all is the inexplicable feeling of contentment deep inside. It's a very special emotion. Ask David!" And eleven-year-old David nods in agreement. "It is so exciting!" His smile says it all.

Six months of intensive practice and over 40 perky and melodious songs. Reji hopes that each participant will take this unique experience of worship to his or her Church, of communicating to the Supreme via music.
