Did the Aryans invade India or not?
|
A few Indian languages closely resemble European tongues though vast distances separate India and Europe. To early historians, this was an intriguing fact that led them to formulate the Aryan Invasion Theory of India.
However, traditional Indian literature did not support the invasion theory. Archaeological evidence that came to light over the years indicated strongly that the theory was untenable.
Unfortunately, that did not stop the Invasion Theory remaining in school textbooks.
A perspective
To place facts and findings in perspective, the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya is organising a two-day seminar on `Ancient History of India according to the evidence of Indian Scriptures and Archaeology', on February 2 and 3, as part of the platinum jubilee celebrations of the institution.
Among the resource persons expected to participate are S. R. Rao, former Deputy Director, Archaeological Survey of India; R. S. Nagaswamy, former Director of Archaeology, Tamil Nadu; and Shrikant G. Talageri, a researcher in Indian history using traditional literature. Dr. Rao discovered a large number of Harappan sites including the port city of Lothal in Gujarat.
He is best known for his discovery of the sunken city of Dwaraka and his analysis of the Indus script.
Register for the seminar at www.srkv.org/history seminar, e-mail srkvtech@vsnl.com or contact G. Murali, Principal on 94431-84645. The last date for registration is February 1.
