Mastitis is common in first-time mothers

MOM'S THE WORD Lactating mothers should regularly breast feed their infants
As most first-time moms will tell, developing aches, getting tired and feeling feverish are all a part of breastfeeding. Many would have ended up with a red, tender and probably swollen area on the breasts. Very likely, this indicates a condition called as Mastitis.
This inflammation could be aggravated by infection when fever sets in. The cause for the condition is usually that the breast is engorged with milk, which remains undrained due to various factors. Tight-fitting underclothing can lead to compression and engorgement. It is also not uncommon for bacteria to spread from the infant to the mother through cracked nipples while nursing. Infection sets in and the usual suspect is Staphylococcus. If the infection is not curtailed immediately, it can lead to formation of pus and the retained pus in the gland can become the focus of infection, which can spread to all over the breast.
Washing the hands after every nappy change prevents infection from spreading. Frequent feeding, as and when the infant demands, will help prevent engorgement. Once pain, swelling and tenderness sets in, the mother should feed the child from the affected side. However, if the baby cries, it could be due to change in the taste of milk, which calls for prompt treatment. Breast pumps can prevent secondary infections in such cases.
Cold compress relieves pain and warm compression helps improve blood circulation in the affected area. Increased intake of fluids helps the body fight inflammation and good nutrition boosts immunity.
Belladonna helps prevent symptoms in the early stages. Bryonia is the remedy for painful menstrual periods. Chamomilla and Ratanhia help when nipples are cracked while Phytolacca helps relieve pain in mammary glands. Hepar and Silicea are recommended to abort the formation of pus and relieve the blockage of the ducts.
