This is for all those Lata Mangeshkar fans who were tired of listening to the ageless charmer only in Mahal, Mughal-e-Azam and Abhimaan, etc - the songs from these films seem to be available on every shelf. Now, comes a twin CD pack that contains some of the songs you might get to listen to on one of those old song programmes on FM at night but you won't easily find them in the music shop. For instance, there are songs like "Ek Baat Kahoon Gar Mano Tum" from Golmaal or "Khwab Bankar Koi Aayega" from Raziya Sultan. As also those gems from Prem Parbat and Khamoshi - "Yeh Dil Aur Unki Nigahon Ke Saye" and "Hamne Dekhi Hai In Ankhon Ki". Almost every song in this 23-song presentation is worth a rewind. Though the likes of Gulzar, R.D. Burman, Hemant Kumar, Salil Choudhury, Khayyam and Usha Khanna lend wonderful support through their special talents, it remains a Lata saga. It is the kind of collection that makes the fast forward sign on your music system superfluous. Buy it for moments of real listening pleasure. Nostalgia is seldom so melodious.

Legendary Legacy, Rs.99 CD

This album by well-known santoor player Tarun Bhattacharya features the maestro in a rendition of the raga Charukeshi. Set within classical parameters, it proceeds on traditional lines. The first section contains the elaboration of the raga in alap and jod. Next is a vilambit (slow) gat - a musical composition for an instrument as opposed to one for a vocalist - and finally a drut (fast tempo) gat. Bhattacharya, an exponent of the Maihar gharana, is a disciple of his father Pandit Robi Bhattacharya, besides Pandit Dulal Roy as well as Pandit Ravi Shankar. The album is full of reposeful melody and resonance. Tabla accompaniment is provided by Ramkumar Mishra.
