`Stop! It's red'

Follow road rules, says T. V. Rao of Besant Nagar

T. V. Rao

When it comes to road discipline, most seem to have total disregard. They keep inching forward even when the signal is red and if they care to stop, they invariably cross the stop line and speed away before the signal turns green. It's not impatience, but sheer indiscipline. Though indiscipline cuts across all vehicle owners, two wheeler and autorickshaw drivers have mastered the `art'. They weave their way through heavy traffic, violating lane discipline. This leads to traffic blocks, causing inconvenience to other road users. What's worse, people start honking at signals even before the green light comes on.

With an increase in the number of vehicles, it's becoming a nightmare to drive on the roads. And what's more, sometimes, the traffic policemen are mute spectators.

To add to the chaos, trucks and autos spew thick clouds of exhaust fumes. Why can't the police simply stop vehicles that obviously cause pollution and book the drivers? I know the traffic policemen have to do their job, day in and day out, rain or shine, and it is not exactly a pleasant experience. Yet, they can't be excused for not regulating the traffic and ensuring discipline on the road.
