A platform for artisans from all over the country
|
A ten-day exhibition organised by Small Industries Product Promotion Organisation Ltd, Madurai, in association with the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India will put up on display handicrafts made by women artisans belonging to various Self Help Groups.
The exhibition is on till February 18 at the VOC Park and will showcase products like hand embroidery, crochet lace, Kalamkari prints, terracotta handicrafts, Toda embroidery, Banjara embroidery, stone and woodcarvings, jute and textile-based handicrafts, textiles as well as a range of jewellery.
The exhibition is being organised under the aegis of Ambedkar Hastshilp Vikash Yojana and it aims to expose the crafts persons to the urban market as well as help them produce market-oriented designs.
The idea is to eliminate the role of the middle-man and educate the crafts persons on the tastes and preferences of the urban market. This will also benefit the consumers as they will get the products directly from the artisans at a reasonable cost.
