His trademark smile and the much-copied hairstyle are still intact. But actor Rahul Roy knows it's not going to be easy for him to recreate the magic of Aashiqui. "It's not like I have the Yash Chopras backing me. But I've never been the kind of person to feel that a glass is half empty. I am an optimist.
I know the craft, have learnt from my experiences, shed my inhibitions and know I can get back. My contemporaries like Akshay Kumar are way ahead of me, but that's fine," he shrugs, in the city to promote his comeback film Rafta Rafta.
Rafta Rafta, a comic thriller, has Roy playing the baddie for the first time. "I've done the hero's part several times. It's nice to be on the other side. But it's a one off thing. In my forthcoming films, I will be back as the hero," says the actor, who has a handful of films coming up.
He is also set to join hands with his mentor Mahesh Bhatt. "I've done quite a few films earlier with Mr.Bhatt. I am waiting to start working on his project again; we'll come up with something special for sure."
Talking of Bhatt takes him back to his earlier days, and Roy takes stock of where he went wrong. "At one point, I had committed to 21 films. I was just moving from point A to B to complete my film shootings, not giving myself time to realise that some of my films were just not shaping up well." The actor also flirted with television for a brief period, but confesses that the small screen is not his cup of tea. "I like stories that have a beginning, a middle and an end. I can't identify with soaps that go on for five years," he says.
It was after his stint in television that he took a break. "I was away from acting for six years. In a film, it takes you just an hour to patao a girl. In reality, it took me a year. Now I am happily married," he grins. On a serious note, he says, "There were personal commitments; I lost my father and had to take care of the family business. But now I am back and acting is my first priority."
