It means princess in Arabic and walking into the plush interiors of Zarah, the high-profile couture store on 100 Feet Road in Indiranagar one immediately feels like royalty. "I named the store after my daughter," says Nadira Iqbal, for whom Zarah is a natural extension of her impeccable taste. The stunning mum of three says: "Zarah is pretty excited to have a store named after her!"
High couture
"For the store, I have put together stuff I like. So there are the Pakistani suits that are really, really popular. The ghungroos on the poncha are a huge hit. There is no conscious theme as such, but the clothes have Arabian Nights kind of sensibility."
The store is spread over 2,500 sq. ft. and is decorated with vivid splashes of red. "Red is my lucky colour, so I asked the designer to include red in the interiors." Nadira conceived Zarah a year ago as she felt "Bangalore was going through a transition in taste and the demand for couture was increasing".
Zarah at present stocks the works of six designers including opulent bridal wear from Arjun and Anjalee Kapoor, rocking tunics from Bhairavi Jaikishan, dreamy saris from Nisha Sagar and some real cool boho chic from upcoming designer Pia Gehani.
"I will soon be stocking the in-house label Zarah which would be an extension of my style statement. While the clothes are mainly party wear, there is stuff that could be daywear as well. Like there are some of Bhairavi's tunics with embroidery that could be daywear while the ones with sequins and cut-dana work could be for party wear. The suits with Kashmiri work and the Pakistani suits make for classy everyday wear."
Colours are vibrant with oranges and reds jostling for space with pretty pinks and maroons in fabrics like georgettes and chiffons. And while we are all used to maroons and reds for bridal wear, Arjun and Anjalee have created some visual delights in turquoise and yellow.
There are wonderful accessories like an absolutely divine hair ornament that instantly turns into a Senorita. Viva la Espanola! The bags might not be the last word in practicality as you cannot put more than perhaps a lipstick, mobile and credit card in them, but then what more does a girl need to carry? With zardosi and sequins and other eye-catching embellishments, the little clutches and pouches add that extra zing to an outfit.
Zany belts
The store also stocks some zany belts that Nadira picked up on her trips to London and Hong Kong. And also to put you in the right mood and right light there are handcrafted candles from Dimple Kapadia's Faraway Tree. And so like the Good Book says, let there be light!
Zarah can be contacted on 25257003/4.
