Romance with style

Classic Polo has opened its second retail outlet in the city

"Rave the Romance", cries the Classic Polo promo in line with the sentiment of the season. For Classic Polo, "raving the romance" means opening its second retail showroom in the city (at Spencer's Plaza) and unveiling its latest menswear collection at a fashion show at the atrium of Spencer's Plaza.

When the muscled men took a break from their ramp routine, Radio Jockey Suchitra (host for the evening) announced Classic Polo had another surprise in store. "As a Valentine's Day bonanza, its clothes will be sold at a 50 per cent discount all through February".

What the models (Kamlesh, Mario, Hemanth, Anand, John and Pradeesh) wore gave ample evidence of Polo's new status as a lifestyle brand. "We've moved from being primarily a T-shirt brand to a lifestyle brand," says Vasant, business head, Classic Polo.

Probably as a mark of respect to the T-shirt ("The name Polo often brought T-shirt to mind"), at the beginning, the models chose to show off this symbol of informality. But, for most part of the show, they were togged up in dresses that looked like they were created for a world that straddles two time zones — popularly called the nine-to-five grind and the nine-till-sleep-overtakes-you cruise.

All the shirts are cotton-based ("We grow our own cotton on 5,000 acres of land through contract farming. We are a vertically integrated company in the complete sense of the term — we do the ginning, spinning and knitting ourselves"). But that's just about the common denominator.

"We are planning three more retail outlets in the city," says Vasant, discussing the company's plans for the next financial year. "We want to consolidate our position in the South and expand in the West. By mid-2007, we hope to set up 100 retail showrooms in these areas. Once we have executed this plan, we will direct our energies towards the North and the East."
