Vyjayantimala Bali on the importance of helmets

VYJAYANTIMALA BALI Make helmet wearing compulsory
I wish our two-wheeler riders become aware of the danger of fatal accidents that are on the rise. Despite traffic rules, signboards and safety measures, there seems to be little change in their attitude. I am glad the Commissioner of Police (Traffic) has stressed on the importance of wearing helmets and the city police would launch helmet campaigns to sensitise people on a regular basis.
Recently, my driver's young son, who was on a two-wheeler, met with a serious accident and suffered multiple brain damage. When we rushed to the hospital, we thought we had almost lost him, but he miraculously survived. Not every time and not in every case can one expect miracles to happen.
It is horrifying to see bikers zooming past vehicles and pedestrians at high speed not considering the risk to other road users, leave alone themselves. If only these riders realised the importance of safeguarding vital parts of their body such as the head, they would be wiser. I appeal to the Government to make helmet wearing compulsory by enforcing a law as has been done in Delhi, Maharashtra and, now, in Andhra Pradesh.
